StubHub

An American book transfer and resale business is called StubHub. It offers services to those who buy and sell tickets for live entertainment events like sporting events, concerts, plays, and other live performances. It was the biggest ticket market in the world by 2015. Despite not officially disclosing any financial information, the company had over 16 million unique visits and about 10 million live events in 2015 alone.

In the year 2000, Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr launched StubHub. In 2007, eBay paid $310 million for the company, and Viagogo purchased it once more in 2020.

History:

Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr, two former Stanford Business School students and investment bankers, launched StubHub in March 2000 as a class project. The Seattle Mariners were one of their first significant sports partnerships in 2001. StubHub and eBay were in negotiations in 2002 to be acquired by eBay for $20 million, but the deal later “fell apart over price.”[10] StubHub originally planned to “build a ticket transaction system that Fluhr could sell to other online portals and providers”, but in 2003 the business started running Google advertisements for the StubHub website itself, directly enabling ticket transactions from vendors to buyers. Baker departed the business in 2005 after developing a rift with Fluhr, keeping 10% of the stock.

Pequot Ventures helped the business raise between $10 million and $25 million in 2005.

StubHub became embroiled in many conflicts between the New England Patriots and New York Yankees in 2006 over the selling of season sports tickets in New England.

In a transaction, StubHub charges fees to both the buyer and the seller as of 2019, with fees only being displayed in full at the end of deals. From detractors, StubHub has defended this “all-in” pricing strategy as the norm in the business.  StubHub introduced “all-in” pricing in 2014, which shows the buyer the complete cost of the ticket up front rather than tacking on the fees at the end. StubHub, however, went back to the previous practice of adding fees at the very end of the transaction in 2015.

The business maintains offices in Ireland, Switzerland, Los Angeles, Irvine, New York, and Salt Lake City. StubHub Holdings employed 650 full-time workers as of 2022, with Viagogo accounting for one-third of those workers. Companies like Ticketmaster, Vivid Seats, and SeatGeek are competitors of its.

Partnerships:

StubHub has collaborated with numerous businesses and sports franchises. The business is associated with Apple Inc., Spotify, BandPage, and Amazon.com, among others.

Sports:

StubHub has grown to be a significant sports sponsor. An exclusive agreement between StubHub and Major League Baseball (MLB) was made in 2007. They receive a portion of the 25% commission that StubHub makes on each side of a season ticket purchase and sale.

As of April 2013, StubHub had 35 college sponsorship agreements, including ones with the Universities of Texas, Michigan, and USC. Other partners include ESPN, Tickets.com, Paciolan, IMG, and about 30 multi-use venues and festivals, such as South by Southwest and the Staples Center.[103] negotiated a secondary ticket sales agreement with the Seattle Mariners in 2001.

All teams, regardless of partnership (or lack thereof), may have their tickets offered there, therefore fans who want to purchase tickets with a team that does not have a relationship with StubHub may still do so. Though such tickets can be mailed by UPS or picked up at StubHub’s last-minute ticket windows, electronic downloading and printing of e-tickets may not be possible if a club does not have an official connection with StubHub. The StubHub fan guarantee safeguards all of the tickets that are purchased there.
